Going Vegan

Limitations fuel creativity and I’ve been eating too much cheap meat. On January 1st I will go vegan for an entire month. Consider this your one month warning if you want to join.

The holidays can spark a food hangover that will last for days. It’s like you can actually feel gravy coming straight out of your pours. What better way to shake off some of that holiday glut than giving up meat and dairy altogether?

This is a chance to work with new ingredients and techniques. Cheese is awesome, but won’t it be cool to look for new ways to satiate? I’m curious to know what my body will feel like- lighter, sluggish, energized… Who knows?

Over the next few weeks I will start to study. Stand by.

In the meantime, pork gyoza will be my next post.

  1. Wow! That's hard core! I've been doing well with the vegetarian thing for a good year now, but Vegan is one step I haven't been able to take. That said, you can probably do anything for a month! Good luck. I'm looking forward to hearing how it goes! Jen L.

  2. Hey Jen,
Nice to see you here. Maybe I'm delusional, but I don't feel this will be a huge sacrafice. I make accidental vegan food all the time. Let's hope I won't have to eat my words with non-dairy chocolate.

  5. Well, Dev, you know I think that's great! It can actually help to check out raw food... I can't live without chocolate or cheese, for example. There are hundreds of cashew cheese recipes, just need a food processor. I LOVE the filling from the beet ravioli recipe in Raw Food Real World (book from the Pure F&W restaurant), and The Everything Raw Food book by Mike Snyder has a lot of simple recipes. Can't wait to hear how it goes!

  6. p.s. By "help" I mean, raw recipes can offer lots of additional tasty vegan options. (Not "help" as in benefit your health, etc. That goes without saying, but I ain't tryin to preach!)

  7. I salute you! Just for the heck of it, I did a complete vegan diet for 1 week a few months ago. I discovered some new foods and discovered some foods that are best left to others to eat :-) It was good experience but, it was not easy.
I look forward to reading about your one month vegan experience.

  8. That's exciting. Every few years I do this this for 21 days - and get this, Devon - as a rule have always dropped ten pounds without even trying!

The key, for me, is eating one meal of my homemade bean-vegetable soup whenever I feel like I have to eat; nothing satiates me like that. I haven't cooked it in awhile so the next time I do, I'll measure the ingredients and share the recipe with you.

  11. I've been thinking about going vegitarian for a while now. I don't think I could do it permanently, but I do think it would be interesting to try for a month or so. I need to try something new and I also think it will help me look at food in a different way.

Good luck! I look forward to seeing what you come up with.

  13. I do this every other month, and only eat meat once or twice only one week...its worth it, and also I am a market purist in the summer. I believe we can make a difference on our body and the earth...excited to read about how you manage...

  15. Jen,
I'll get the book and try some things out. That's what Traveling Taste Buds is all about. I try the scary and let you know how it goes. Happy New Year!

FOOD IS ONE OF THE MOST VISCERAL ASPECTS OF A CULTURE; IT CAN BE EXPERIENCED WITH NO LANGUAGE SKILLS, NO GUIDE, AND MOST TIMES WITH VERY LITTLE MONEY.
